The generator downstairs just coughed, sputtered, and died. In our Gbagada workspace, that is the universal cue for every developer in the room to let out a collective, synchronized sigh.

We are currently tracking a massive spike in global oil prices. News feeds are buzzing with reports of US-Iran military strikes and escalating tensions in the Middle East. While analysts on TV talk about "supply chains" and "market volatility," my mind immediately goes to something far more immediate: the cost of a liter of diesel at the filling station down the road, and the inevitable squeeze on our startup’s runway.

For those of us building tech in Nigeria, global macro shocks are not abstract concepts. They are line items on our monthly spreadsheet. When global oil spikes, our local operating costs shoot through the roof, and our software has to get a whole lot leaner to survive.

When FX rates fluctuate because of global energy market shakes, our AWS and Google Cloud bills become unpredictable monsters. We pay for our servers in USD, but our users pay us in Naira. Every single fraction of a dollar matters.

This means we cannot afford lazy engineering.

We had to sit down last week and ruthlessly audit our backend architecture. We looked at how our database queries were structured. If a service is hitting the database fifty times for a single dashboard render, that is no longer just "technical debt"—it is an active drain on our company's bank account.

We started aggressive caching. We put Redis to work like never before, reducing our external API calls to foreign identity verification services that charge us in dollars. We optimized our payload sizes, cutting down on bandwidth because internet data costs are creeping up too.

Optimizing code to save cost

It is not just about our own server bills; it is about our users. We build payment tools used by merchants in busy markets from Owerri to the main market in Onitsha.

When fuel prices rise, transport costs go up, and people have to make hard choices. They do not have the patience for a banking app that spins endlessly because the local cell tower lost power and the network is crawling. If a merchant's phone battery is at 12% because they could not power their generator today, our app cannot be a battery hog.

We have had to pivot our product design to be aggressively light.

  • Offline-first state management: If the connection drops mid-transaction, the app must gracefully queue the request locally using SQLite and sync the moment a signal drops back in.
  • Zero bloat UI: We stripped out heavy animations and heavy custom fonts. Every kilobyte we save is a second saved on a loading screen for a merchant trying to confirm a customer's transfer.

No Gree for Anybody, Not Even the Macroeconomy

Building here is a constant exercise in adaptation. When the external environment changes, you do not sit fold your hands and complain about the government or global politics. You adapt the codebase.

We are writing code that assumes the power will go off. We are building systems that assume the internet is unstable and that dollar-denominated APIs will double in price next month.

It is tough, exhausting work. But when you finally deploy an update that keeps a small business running smoothly in the middle of a national fuel scarcity, you realize this is exactly why we build. We do not just write code for ideal conditions; we write code that survives the real world.

Now, let me go find who has the key to the fuel store before my laptop battery hits single digits.
