It’s 2:00 AM. The power just blinked—thank God for the inverter—and I’ve finally pushed the last commit of a side project I’ve been hacking away at for three weeks. The code is clean, the API responses are blazing fast, and I’m ready to share it. Then, I look at the repository.

That blank, white README.md file is staring back at me like a silent threat.

Writing a README is the ultimate momentum killer. You’ve just spent days in the flow state, fighting bugs and routing issues, and now you have to manually type out Markdown, look up syntax for badges, and format installation steps. Half the time, I just slap a title and a one-sentence description, tell myself I'll "update it later," and never touch it again.

It's why so many brilliant open-source projects by Nigerian developers look abandoned. The code is pure gold, but the landing page looks like a ghost town.

This is why ReadmeForge caught my eye. The builder, Bilal, basically decided he was tired of starting from scratch and built a block-based visual editor where you drag, drop, and fill in your content to export a clean README.

Let’s talk about how this thing is built because the execution here is clean. He went with React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS. Solid, fast, lightweight. But the real magic is in the state management and user flow. He used Zustand with persist middleware, meaning everything is saved locally in your browser’s localStorage.

There is no sign-up. No bloated backend database. No tracking. You can even set up separate workspaces keyed by email, all running client-side.

For anyone who has tried to code during a fuel scarcity run or while managing a patchy MTN hotspot in a quiet corner of Akure, this zero-friction, offline-friendly approach is a massive win. You don't need to query a server every time you rearrange a section.

The editor gives you 11 pre-built blocks: titles, badges, API docs, usage, license, and custom markdown. You use @dnd-kit to drag them around, edit the text, see a live preview of how GitHub will render it, and hit download. Done.

Why Presentation is Half the Battle

I love products that don't force me to create an account. Let me just do my job and leave.

It reminds me of the "No gree for anybody" mindset we’ve been carrying lately. Why should we tolerate bad developer UX? We shouldn't. If you’re trying to build a personal brand or looking for global remote roles from Nigeria, your GitHub profile is your CV. A sloppy README suggests sloppy code, even if your backend is built like a fortress. Presenting your work beautifully is half the battle.

Is ReadmeForge perfect? Not yet. While local storage is great for quick edits, I’d love to see a simple GitHub integration down the line—maybe a one-click commit to push the generated README directly to a repo via an access token. Also, having custom reusable templates for different types of projects (like a lightweight NPM package versus a massive Next.js full-stack app) would save even more time.

At the end of the day, tools like this succeed because they respect our time. They let us focus on what we actually love—building—while automating the tedious parts of the job.
