Systems fail, governments stall, and the internet flickers. Here is how we keep the lights on when everything else decides to take a break.
My inverter just beeped at me. That’s the third time this afternoon. It’s funny how I’m sitting here reading about the US government finally signing a bill to end a record shutdown while I’m basically running a mini-utility company just to keep my MacBook alive.
We talk about May Day as a holiday, but for those of us in the Nigerian tech space, "work" is a constant battle against friction. Whether you're a dev in a quiet corner of Jos enjoying that rare cold breeze or you're dodging the chaos of a bus park in Owerri to get to a workstation, you know that uptime is a hard-won luxury.
The High Cost of Downtime
When systems stop, people lose more than just time. They lose trust. The news today is full of "shutdowns" and "economic blackouts," but for a founder here, a shutdown is what happens when your payment gateway decides to have a mid-life crisis on a payday Friday.
I've spent nights debugging API integrations that only seem to fail when the user's "Sapa" is at its peak and they desperately need that transaction to go through. You realize quickly that you aren't just building an app; you're building a lifeline. If your UX can’t handle a spotty 2G connection in Onitsha, you haven't really built anything useful yet.
Building for the "No Gree" Market
There’s this "No gree for anybody" energy that’s become our unofficial anthem lately. I’ve started applying that directly to my tech stack. I don’t trust "perfect" conditions anymore. I assume the database will lag, the CDN will be slow, and the user’s power will cut mid-transaction.
Building resilient software for this market means:
- Heavy local caching because the network is a habitual liar.
- Optimistic UI updates so the app feels snappy even when the backend is struggling with latency.
- Graceful degradation that doesn't just throw a generic "Error 500" but actually tells the guy in Akure exactly what to do next.
It’s Always About the Execution
The headlines can argue about bills and funding all they want. At the end of the day, someone has to write the code that handles the actual disbursements. Someone has to make sure the server doesn’t melt when thousands of people hit the "claim" button at the same time.
I’m tired of hearing about "potential." I want to see execution. I want to see products that don't crumble the moment things get a bit shaky. Whether it's a May Day protest or a legislative deadlock, the world keeps spinning because workers—and specifically the people building the digital pipes—refuse to let the system stay down.
Time to get back to it. This bug in my auth flow isn't going to fix itself, and my inverter is giving me that "look" again. Stay building.
