Cash on Delivery is a Nightmare—And Why Fincart's $2.8M Seed Makes Sense to Me

Building e-commerce tech across Africa means wrestling with cash-on-delivery chaos and fragmented couriers. Fincart just pulled $2.8M to fix that exact backend mess.

Cash on Delivery is a Nightmare—And Why Fincart's $2.8M Seed Makes Sense to Me

If you’ve ever tried to write checkout logic or manage back-office order flows for a merchant on this continent, you know the exact moment your mental health takes a nose-dive: Cash on Delivery reconciliation.

It's messy, it breaks standard database paradigms, and it ruins your database state management.

So when I saw that Cairo-based startup Fincart just closed a $2.8M+ seed round to scale their e-commerce operating system, my immediate reaction wasn't "Oh look, another seed round." It was "Finally, somebody with real operational experience is attacking the worst part of African e-commerce backend engineering."

Coding and setup

The Backend Nightmare of Cash-on-Delivery

If you build e-commerce tools in North America or Europe, a completed order is simple: customer hits buy, Stripe charges the card, webhooks trigger, product ships. Clean.

Try doing that for a merchant shipping goods from a hub in Akure to a customer in Port Harcourt, or across Cairo’s sprawling suburbs. The order status stays in limbo for days. Did the customer accept the package? Did the third-party courier collect cash? Did the rider transfer the money to the logistics provider, or is it sitting in someone’s personal bank account waiting for manual reconciliation at the end of the week?

When you’re tracking this across 400+ different merchants—which Fincart is already doing—that state machine gets horrifying real fast.

Fincart’s entire value proposition is wrapping up shipping, cash-on-delivery reconciliation, revenue-based financing, and customer retention tools into one operational platform. That isn't shiny consumer-facing tech; it's ugly, unsexy plumbing. And plumbing is where real software value lives.

Founders Who Have Worked in the Trenches

One detail in the raise really caught my attention: the founders, Mostafa El Masry and Nihal Ali, came out of Careem, Glovo, Vodafone, and Delivery Hero.

That matters immensely.

Engineers and product managers who have built for last-mile delivery giants don't build software based on Silicon Valley assumptions. They know the feeling when a driver’s app drops offline, or when a courier company’s API hasn't updated its status endpoint in six hours. They know that "AI customer retention" can't just be an LLM chatbot—it has to be predictive algorithms that flag high-risk COD orders before you pay for the rider to trek across town.

Seeing investors like Launch Africa, Antler MENAP, and Yango Ventures drop over $2.8M into this stage tells me the market is realizing that standard Shopify plugins just don't cut it out here.

What We Need to See More Of

Living and building software in Nigeria, I spend a lot of time annoyed by tools that assume a frictionless ecosystem. You try to integrate an off-the-shelf platform for a local business owner, and within two weeks you're writing custom Python scripts just to calculate their actual daily cash flow because half their sales are settled via offline transfers or courier cash collection.

We need more founders who look at the weird, chaotic edge-cases of African commerce—the "Sapa" moments, the offline trips, the manual cash transfers—and build robust API-first abstractions over them.

Fincart plans to use this money to expand further into MENA and Africa by 2027. I'll be watching their API docs and product execution closely. If they can solve cash reconciliation across multiple borders and currencies without forcing merchants into five different browser tabs, they'll have earned every single dollar of that $2.8M.
