Last week, a friend of mine who runs a wholesale supply hub in Onitsha almost lost half a million Naira because of a voice note. It wasn't some random phishing link or a hacked account. It was a WhatsApp voice note that sounded exactly like his primary distributor in Akure, asking him to divert a payment to a new "temporary" bank account.

He only hesitated because the distributor usually calls him "My leader," but the voice note used his actual name. That tiny slip saved him. But it got me thinking, sitting here at my desk in Gbagada, trying to debug a payment gateway: we are completely unprepared for the wave of AI-driven fraud hitting Nigerian small businesses right now.

While tech founders are busy pitching AI wrappers to investors, bad actors are already using the same tech for very practical, very destructive social engineering on the ground.

The Anatomy of the New "Low-Tech" High-Tech Scam

We often think of AI fraud as some complex, Hollywood-style database breach. It’s not. In our market, it is dirty, fast, and highly targeted.

Scammers are scraping public Instagram pages of local vendors, downloading their video reels, and feeding the audio into cheap voice-cloning tools. They then target the business's customers or suppliers on WhatsApp.

Another trick is automated fake bank alerts. We used to laugh at the badly formatted "SMS alerts" that fraudsters sent to local shop owners. Now, they are using generative models to spin up highly convincing, dynamic PDF receipts that look exactly like actual transaction receipts from top Nigerian banks, bypassing the quick visual checks that busy shop owners rely on during rush hours.

Why Our Current UX is Failing the Average Merchant

As developers, we love to build elegant verification flows. We want people to use biometrics, multi-factor authentication, and complicated security dashboards. But let's be real: have you tried explaining a 3D-Secure prompt to an elder who is trying to run a shop in the chaotic middle of an Owerri market?

If the security flow is too hard, users bypass it. They go back to offline bank transfers, cash, or trusting WhatsApp chats. When we make our security too heavy, we push merchants right back into the hands of the scammers.

The messy flow of transaction data that we need to protect

And then there is the infrastructure issue. When network speeds drop or data costs bite—which happens more often than we'd like to admit—heavy security checks simply fail. A merchant trying to verify a payment on a slow connection will often just take the buyer's word for it to avoid keeping a queue waiting. That's the vulnerability window.

What We Can Actually Do on the Backend

We can't just tell merchants to "be careful." We have to build defense mechanisms into the apps they use daily. Here is what I am experimenting with on my current project:

  • Behavioral Risk Scoring: Instead of just checking if a password is correct, we need to track transactional patterns. If a vendor suddenly changes their withdrawal bank account or updates their profile details and immediately tries to move funds, we need to trigger a mandatory 24-hour hold, regardless of who "authorized" it.
  • Decentralized Verification: We need simple, offline-first verification steps. For example, a quick USSD-based challenge-response flow that doesn't rely on internet connectivity or flashy UI.
  • Whitelisting Voice/Media: If your app uses voice notes for transactions or customer support, we should be hashing and signing those media files on our servers so the recipient app can verify if the audio actually originated from our platform or was uploaded from an external, potentially synthetic source.

It is easy to get caught up in building cool features, but if we don't secure the basic pipelines of trust, the average Nigerian SME will simply stop trusting digital platforms. The "No gree for anybody" mindset shouldn't just be a meme; it needs to be our engineering philosophy when we write code to protect the people keeping our economy afloat.
