Building a unified API for 41 currencies is a flex, but it’s the distribution that breaks you. Here is why one of the cleanest fintech builds is calling it quits.
It’s a specific kind of heartbreak when you see a startup shut down not because the code was buggy, but because the "business" part just wouldn't click. We’ve all been there—hunched over a mechanical keyboard in a quiet corner of a Gbagada workstation, thinking that if we just optimize one more endpoint or integrate one more protocol, the users will come flooding in.
Uchi Uchibeke’s announcement about Chimoney hitting the brakes is a sobering reminder for every dev-founder in Nigeria. The product worked. They had the Interledger protocol running, handled 41 currencies, and snagged licenses that most people only dream of. But the "No gree for anybody" energy we have as builders sometimes blinds us to the fact that marketing is just as hard as debugging a race condition.
The Engineering Trap
As developers, we love complexity. We love the idea of a "unified API" that handles bank transfers, mobile money, and stablecoins in one go. It feels like magic. Chimoney was doing the heavy lifting for that freelancer in Akure who just wants to get paid by a client in Toronto without losing 20% to middleman fees and "bank charges" that make no sense.
But here’s the thing: while you’re busy making sure your Interledger implementation is perfect, the regulatory clock is ticking. Uchi mentioned that they raised less than $1M over four years. In the world of cross-border fintech, that’s basically "Sapa" levels of funding. You're trying to fight heavyweights while living on bread and tea.
Compliance is a Silent Killer
I don't think people realize how much it costs to stay legal. It’s not just about writing the code; it’s about the audits. Every jurisdiction you touch wants a piece of your time and your balance sheet. Being one of the first to get the Bank of Canada’s PSP license is a massive technical and administrative win, but those licenses don't pay for themselves.
If your revenue is flat and you’re spending your days talking to lawyers instead of growth hackers, the math eventually stops adding up. You can have the cleanest codebase in West Africa, but if the cost of proving you're "allowed" to move money exceeds the profit from moving that money, you're just running a very expensive hobby.
Shutting Down with Dignity
What I respect most here is the "clean" exit. No "ghosting" clients, no disappearing with wallet balances. I’ve seen too many local projects just stop responding to Slack messages when things go south. Chimoney is publishing migration playbooks for devs and refunding every kobo. That’s how you keep your reputation intact for the next build.
Uchi is already pivoting to AI agent authorization with APort. It makes sense. He's moving from the "how do we move money" problem to the "how do we let machines move money safely" problem.
The takeaway for the rest of us? Stop hiding in your IDE. If you’re building something in a room in Jos or a hub in Lagos, get out and talk to people. Make sure the world knows your API exists before the audit fees eat your lunch. Either bootstrap a niche that actually pays the bills or raise enough to survive the regulatory gauntlet. Doing both halfway is a recipe for a very polite "goodbye" post.
