That Mini-Heart Attack When Google Bans Your Ad Account
There’s nothing quite like a 'Circumventing Systems' flag to ruin a perfectly good Tuesday. Here is how I handled the panic and actually fixed it.

I was sitting in a Gbagada workstation, finally feeling like I’d cracked the code on a new landing page, when the email hit. Google Ads decided I was "circumventing systems." If you’ve ever seen that red bar at the top of your dashboard, you know the feeling. It’s like the "Sapa" of the digital world—sudden, paralyzing, and seemingly impossible to escape.
For those of us building products in Nigeria, these flags feel even more personal. You’re already battling shaky power, expensive data, and the general "No gree for anybody" energy of the market. When a global giant like Google decides your account is a threat, it feels like the algorithm is just looking for a reason to gatekeep you.
The Vagueness is the Point
The problem with a "Circumventing Systems" flag is that it tells you absolutely nothing. It’s the "I’m fine" of error messages. It could mean your site has malware, you’re using weird redirects, or maybe the bot just didn’t like the way your CSS loaded that morning.
In Mayur’s case, it was a reminder that Google is basically a giant, automated hall monitor. If your landing page doesn't perfectly mirror what the ad promises, or if you have scripts running that look even slightly "sneaky," they pull the plug. They don't ask questions. They don't care if you're a small founder in Akure trying to scale your first SaaS. They just shut the door.
How I Stopped Panicking and Started Debugging
The first thing I did was stop trying to "hack" the appeal. You can't sweet-talk a bot. I had to look at my tech stack like a stranger would.
- The Redirect Trap: I checked every single URL. Sometimes, we use shorteners or tracking scripts that look like "cloaking" to an automated system. If the destination URL isn't crystal clear, you're done.
- Clean Your Scripts: I went through the header tags. If you have old, broken tracking pixels from three different experiments, it looks messy. Bots hate messy.
- Ownership Verification: This is where many of us get tripped up. Ensure your Search Console, Analytics, and Ads accounts are all singing the same song. If Google thinks someone else is running ads for your domain, you're flagged.
The "No Gree" Appeal Process
When it finally came time to appeal, I didn't write a Shakespearean tragedy. I wrote a technical log. "I checked X, I removed Y, I verified Z." I treated the Google reviewer like a senior dev doing a code review. You have to show them you’ve actually done the work to comply, not just clicked the "I promise I'm good" button.
Building from here means we have to be twice as clean with our execution. We don't have the luxury of "moving fast and breaking things" when the things we break are our only gateways to a global audience. Whether you're working from a quiet corner in Jos or the chaotic energy of an Owerri tech hub, the rules are the same: stay transparent, keep your code clean, and don't let the red banners break your spirit.
Fixing these things isn't about "innovation" or some high-level strategy. It's about getting your hands dirty in the settings, checking your redirects, and proving you aren't a ghost. It’s annoying, but getting that "Account Reinstated" email? That’s better than a cold bottle of Maltina after a long day in the sun.
